Aliado Del Tiempo

White-hot regional Mexican artist Mariano Barba offers an unusually savvy blend of appeal to a diverse array of fans. He dresses the part of a classic vaquero (cowboy hat, jeans) but has the coverboy looks and physique that appeal to young fans. On Aliado del Tiempo, his music offers an equal dose of duality. Its modern delivery and flourishes will excite new fans, but it's traditional enough to appeal to their mothers, fathers, and grandfathers. It's the first time in a long time that regional music has been this exciting. The title track is a prime example, its lulling groove spiced up by an emotive delivery of the heartfelt lyrics. "Es Virgen tu Corazon" is another winning moment. It all sets a high bar--and much anticipation--for what this young buck will do next. --Joey Guerra
