The major automobile manufacturers are playing their cards close to the dashboard when it comes to developing electric cars to meet California's 1998 zero-emissions standard, but other scientists and engineers here share their findings on such aspects as chassis design, thermal comfort, power quality problems at charging stations, lead-acid batteries, and proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
