3V Gear Hugh Glass Damascus Patch Knife
In the summer of 1823, a grizzly bear mauled legendary mountainman Hugh Glass while exploring the Missouri River in search of untrapped waters. The animal ripped the trapper open, carving huge pieces of flesh from his body. Glass's companions slew the bear, but his injuries were far beyond their first aid skills. Two men would stay behind to bury Hugh when life left his body; the rest would move on. Alone in Indian country, the caretakers quickly lost their nerve and fled, taking Glass's gun, knife, and ammunition with them. But Glass wouldn't die.
Glass survived mostly on wild berries and roots. On one occasion he drove two wolves from a downed bison calf, to feast on the meat. Reaching the Cheyenne, he fashioned a crude bull boat and floated down the river. Aided by friendly natives who sewed a bear hide to his back to cover the exposed wounds as well as providing him with food and weapons to defend himself, Glass eventually reached the safety of Fort Kiowa, over 200 miles away.
In Hugh's days of flint lock rifles, a hand forged lead ball was wrapped in a "patch" of cloth, and then "rammed" down into the barrel of the rifle. This patch was cut from a long strip of cotton "patch" material with a small easy to carry blade, the patch knife. A standard EDC item and part of any "buckskinner's" possibles bag.
