1944 WWII Road to Victory Sheet Collectible Stamp Sheet

In 1994 the USPS issued ten new stamps to continue the five- year World War II series, tribute to the men and women who saved our world from the rule of tyranny. The theme of the 1944/1994 series is "1944: Road to Victory. "These stamps tell the story of the Allied forces" rally to destroy the Axis power war-machine and the push to move into the enemy's home territory. First Day of Issue ceremonies for these stamps were held June 6th on the U.S.S. Normandy, which lay off the coast of France. June 6, 1944, was the day the Allied Forces launched their amphibious assault on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy. Although the German defenses were strong, the Allies were able to gain a foothold. From this vantage point, the Allies pushed forward to win the war in Europe. World War II took more lives and caused more destruction than any other war in history. Due to advances in technology, the war was fought on land, in and on the sea, in the air, and in nearly every place on earth. The war resulted in the end of Western Europe's domination of world affairs and the emergence of the U.S. and the Soviet Union as the world's leading powers. The rivalry between the two became known as the "Cold War."
