This 6-CD set contains 100 tracks from the finest EMI recordings of the famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, under some of the world's greatest conductors including EMI's Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Rudolf Kempe, André Cluytens, and Riccardo Muti. The first CD in this 6-CD set, THE STRAUSS FAMILY, focuses on works by Johann Strauss II and other members of his family, while the second CD in this release, AT THE THEATRE, covers orchestral pieces from the operatic repertoire. The third CD, IN RUSSIA, focuses on memorable works by Russian composers. ON HOLIDAY, the fourth CD of this new release, takes its name from a famous LP released by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and features works by composers from all over the world. The fifth disc in this, CLASSICAL MASTERS, features works by the greatest Austrian and German composers of the Classical period. The sixth CD of this set, VIENNESE HERITAGE, covers a group of composers -- most notably Brahms, Bruckner, and Mahler -- who had special associations with Vienna.
